MONDRIAN HOTEL
DOHA
The Mondrian Hotel in Doha is a dream-like world conceived by Marcel Wanders with highly eccentric and theatrical design and lighting inevitably followed this vibe.
“It’s really a space that is made for theatre.”, says Wanders for the interior design concept.
Out-of-scale features and lamps, extravagant juxtaposition of materials, finishings and colours and a highly embedded architectural lighting create a space full of surprises.
All this context, required a very detailed and thorough study for identifying the necessary lighting fixtures to be implemented, as well as the various details.
Different lounges, lobbies and public spaces accommodate different moods for the guest and lighting is set not only with different effects but also in diversified lighting scenarios. Passing from a brightly and diffuse lit atrium in white versus a very intimate and sinuous bar with luminous wall features is a rigorous and difficult balance to handle.
Ceiling lighting coves outline the space, downlights guide the guest and infinite shimmering chandeliers add magic.
Working with such a dramatic and scenographic background requires high discipline, since light had to remain extremely discrete for underlining the variety of features, patterns and artwork, without adding visual noise.
