LUXURY HOTEL
TAORMINA
A Hotel by the sea of Taormina is the backdrop of a particular Hospitality project. Scenery and context are not only inspiration but an extensive constraint to manage during the lighting study. The hotel premises is built inside a renovated convent of the 14th century and this itself set several design challenges to manage.
When lighting is integrated inside such a historical context, the difficulties are significant, both in terms of technology and aesthetics. While illuminating the various Public Spaces, light fittings were inserted into existing architectural features, connected with the existing electrical outlets and required custom designed solutions.
In order to fully enjoy the impressive scenery through the large windows of the Restaurant, a special suspension was developed combining diffuse and very discrete direct light. The contemporary chandelier worked both for providing adjustable light where needed while recalling the monastic aesthetics. Every single adjustable projector is highly schielded for avoiding any glare or reflection on the glazing. At the same time and especially during the evening, the upwards diffusing light is carefully set in terms of intensity for balancing the outdoors lower luminosity and guaranteeing the view of the surroundings.
Decorative elements where allocated following where possible the existing cable outlets and where necessary balancing the absence of architectural light, mixing the contemporary style while fitting the historical context. New millwork elements also integrated light adding another visual layer in the renovated Public Areas, like the Bar, Restaurant, Lounge and Reception.
The outdoor areas of gardens and cloisters were illuminated for guaranteeing orientation or introducing a discrete new lighting installation or by re-using some existing decorative features. Coloured glass and hammered metal naturalistic decorations were the ingredients and also the guide for illuminating the renovated landscape.
For dining by the new Pool rechargeable lamps and contemporary suspensions set the light along with a new Bar Counter area. Light is integrated where possible and respecting all the functional restraints representing a complex and multi-faceted design challenge that require persistence and thorough know-how.
