Metis joined the design team for elaborating this extensive Metro lighting project of several stations, Al Qassar, Al Bidda and the Exhibition and Convention Center DECC.
The metro lighting concept regarding mainly the public areas had been defined by the UN Studio and aimed at creating a travel experience rather than an ordinary underground journey.
Applying and executing the lighting concept was the scope of services of Metis and the process began in 2015 together with the launch of our BIM internal team.
As a first light level comes the functional general lighting given by a feature star-like pattern shape that covers the ceiling while integrating light introducing the passenger in an immersive context. Another gesture consists of luminous lines inserted seemingly effortlessly inside the pearlescent ceramic tiles covered vaults working as thresholds as well as imposing gates.
Through the vaults and also the insertion in pillars and other architectural features the lines reinforce the wayfinding system for the passengers throughout the whole infrastructure along the various transitions between ground and concourse levels.
Along the circulation areas the seating and rest spaces are located and underlined by a luminous element of surprise, artificial skylights giving out a sense of daylight always pleasant when underground.
The overall goal through lighting was the effort to develop a conceptual journey inside the usual everyday journey for the locals and an immersive experience for the tourist inside a built environment with iconic local architectural features and textures.
