For the temporary exhibition of the Caravaggio pieces, Metis Lighting developed a custom-made lighting system, based on the intention to experiment on the traditional lighting solutions adopted in museums so far. The Caravaggio paintings are an impressive study on the light and his contrast and notion of light have been object of extensive research, let alone admiration for centuries. Being given the opportunity to illuminate these paintings was itself a source of inspiration.

The main concert was to provide a clear zone for the visitor to admire the painting from the closest distance possible. At the same time, the whole lighting scheme aimed at enhancing the contrast of the paintings, by recreating in some way the same atmosphere. So, the desired lighting solution had to merge those two ideas, and installing the light fittings in the ceiling didn’t seem to be the right option.
